Vanilla Ice Meets Homeschool

STOP!
Collaborate and listen.
Ice is back with a brand new invention.

Oops! Are my 80's showing?

Sorry to say but that is the song that has been running through my head since we did math this morning. We just started double digits with renaming, or as I learned it, "carrying". I was a little concerned because I didn't think John would get it. Oh, me of little faith! It was actually yesterday that the concept was introduced and he took to it like a fish in water. The idea (my brand new invention) came to me very suddenly, go with what he knows! He loves anything having to do with building and construction so I told him we were going to build a house, but in reverse. First we need to build the roof and then we will get our foundation. Here's an example:
36
+29
-----

I said O.K. we know that 6+9= what? He said 15. I said alright go ahead and write that number. He wrote the number and immediately knew something was wrong. I asked him what happened and he said there are other numbers to add up. I told him he was right and said let's go on from here. I told him that the one had to go up in the attic. The foreman needed it to build his house. I said don't panic, you know how to add three numbers. He surely did! We did about twenty problems and he not only understood the concept but said to me, "Mommy, I really like this math. Now that I know what to do, I don't want to stop." Ahhh, the sweet sound of learning!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We went on an impromptu field trip today with our Home Education Group to a lovely little aquarium located on the beach. The boys were glad to go and see some of their friends and, of course, some sharks! Joe really enjoyed himself as well. He said "shark" and "fish". He is a genius, I tell you, a genius!
Anyway, it was a really good day!
Awwhhh! I have tears in my eyes from reading about the math lesson. John is blessed to have a mom like you. How clever to use "construction" vocabulary.
I am even more thankful for this blog since we are playing an increasingly irritating (irritating because I really want to "catch up" with you) game of phone tag.
I wish I knew what today's title means. I'm in the dark about the song. I'll have to ask Dad.
Very cool!!!!!!!!!! Wish I had had you to teach me math. Took me years to figure that subject out.
You are a terrific Mom & a wonderful, inventive teacher. Keep up the good work.
Brilliant! Wish I would have thought of that. I need to "think outside of the box" more often.
Hey Laney
After your last comment about me being a computer moron, I am using my son's nap time (a.k.a my happy place) to figure out how to comment. After all this work I don't remember what your blog was about. Oh yes, sharks!!!! My little boyfriend there is soooo smart. And, where was the profound math breakthrough when I was teaching second grade? Thanks alot. Well, I am pretty sure that my soup is now boiling over on to the stove so- so long for now.
This is a great post! Thanks for sharing your unique ways of teaching - I'll need to use these with David in a few years. I like your Mom & Laurie's comments too.
