Monday, Long Overdue Post

What a flurry of activity the weekend was for all of us!

Saturday I attended a Children's Ministry Conference at our church. It was advertised as being for homeschool parents as well as people participating in children's ministry but there were no "homeschool" workshops. At first I must admit, I was a little disappointed, however, that disappointment did not last long. I found the three workshops that I attended to be wealth's of information and encouragement. This school year, so far, has been great and I have really been feeling motivated and driven to make this our best year ever, the conference solidified that goal!

I attended a workshop about how to teach children to study the Bible inductively, using the Observation, Interpretation, Application model. It is put out by Kay Arthur of Precept Ministries and her book, How To Study Your Bible (for kids) was the inspiration for the workshop. The book teaches children how to study the bible on a level that is easy to understand but not dumbed down. I have been looking for a Bible curriculum that would be, not just a Bible curriculum, but a way of life for my boys. They know all of the Bible stories and the wonderful things that God has done, but I want them to develop a personal relationship with Jesus. I want them to know how to study the Bible for themselves and go beyond the surface, I want God to reveal Himself to them personally and I believe that Bible study (and prayer) are the best ways to do that. I feel as if I have found the missing piece to the puzzle!

Saturday afternoon, after the conference, the boys had a birthday party to attend at our good friend's home. The five of us headed over and what a wonderful time we had! My friend Patty, is a wonderful hostess and a fabulous cook! She made Jambalaya, it was so yummy, and I told her that I must have the recipe. She informed me that the rice she uses is from Louisiana (her home state) and that you can't buy it here, so she gave me a bag of her stash. I told you she was a good friend!

No school today. I taught my class, which I will be giving up soon because work, for me, is not conducive to homeschooling. Today is my catch-up day, laundry, organizing lessons, dinner prep and the like. Joe is running around the house screaming, "markers", which leads me to believe he has found one, which is, never good.

Good day, y'all!

What a neat weekend!!! We have family send us a lot of things out of state for our recipes as well. We have a friend nearby so neat that when she went back up North she brought us home some of our favorite goodies. ;-) I hope your friends rice is OK after the hurricane!

I found I can't do anything on top of homeschooling either. There's plenty of time for that when I'm older. Doesn't stop me from trying every once in awhile though...LOL

Well, thanks for the comment at my blog. I hope I didn't get myself into hot water by responding to the woman again, I coudln't help it (but I did edit before hitting send).

Carrie, My oldest is eight and my middle guy is five and I plan on using it for both of them. The book itself does not list ages on it, but in my opinion is perfect for an 8 yo girl.

I think you and I are similar in what we like and I highly recommend it!

I'll be there to claim it next week.

Hey Elaine!

Please fill me on the conference someday soon. I'm kind of bummed I didn't go. I have Kay Arthur's book for adults & will enjoy hearing how it works for your boys. I finally figured it out - I linked to your blog from mine as well! Woo hoo!

God bless!
Michele

I have used Kay Arthur's method for myself in the past-it leads to good, in-depth bible study!
