Good Morning!

A morning blog? Have the planets realigned? A morning blog is what happens when your husband takes the boys for a walk and you are left to your own devices.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I haven't mentioned this but Kevin's job has taken him far, far away from us. He works four ten hour days and is off on Fridays. Great right? The not so great part is that he stays away at work (his company puts him up in a hotel) for two nights. I am learning to take the good with the bad.
The worst part for me is being alone at night. I freely admit that things that go bump in the night scare me. Looming in the back of my mind is the thought that there is some psychopath in a ski mask hiding in the shower or under my bed just waiting for the right moment to pounce. Rational right?
I realize that as the mother in this scenario I should be brave and ready and able to slay all manner of psychopaths in ski masks. (Or dragons, depending on which fairy tale you read.) I don't have a stash of decent weaponry, although I think I could do some serious damage with my high heels, so I just leave all the lights on.
Usually I do well, but I am still getting to know this house and the noises that it makes. I recently figured out that when the wind blows, the flagpole spins around and makes a noise that sounds like someone opening the door. I don't have to worry about that one anymore unless the inevitable happens and someone really does open the door in which case I hope that I'm wearing heels.
The attic creaks. A lot. That's always good for raising the old heart rate. Most times I just feel like the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz holding onto my tail and repeating, "I do believe in spooks, I do believe in spooks, I do, I do, I do believe in spooks," over and over again.
Oh well.
The boys are back and I hear the breakfast bellows so I must go.
Look to the finish!
Safety Hints from Sleepless...
Get a large dog-Dalmations & Great Pyrenees (spelled wrong I know). Both bond with their families, are very protective especially toward children, & will fiercely protect their people.
Install a lock (if you haven't already) inside your bedroom door. Keep a baseball bat & a canister of "Bear Repellent" (available at all sporting goods shops). Be sure you have a phone next to your bed.
Be sure to have locks on all doors like the ones on hotel room doors. They are much more secure than a chainlock.
Also, check the NRA website for classes in your area. The two I recommend are: Refuse to be a Victim & a home safety course. Neither of these have anything to do with guns.
Personally, I found it frightening when I lived alone. First when my son was 3yrs & then again when I got divorced 12yrs ago. I own a very large gun, a police nightstick, & police issue mace (the latter two left to me by my brother). ALso my dogs will bark anytime someone approaches our doors. A barking dog is great for scaring away anyone who shouldn't be around. Noise is a bad guy's enemy.
So arm yourself with knowledge & have an action plan. Now...sleep well.
Have a blessed weekend. I just love your posts. Thanks for letting me share my tips.
Blessed be...
PS I turn off all my lights & sleep like a baby. I have for years now. You will get used to the noises & feel more secure as you settle in.
Good morning! I did not know about Kevin...the good thing is, he is working. I know what you mean about nights alone. There are times when Steve works the late shift (until 2 am) and everything freaks me out. Sometimes if I am really having a hard time, I take a Tylenol PM. Good luck and remember, high heels can really do some damage!
I am so totally afraid of the dark. So no hints from me. (((sorry)))
When my dh is out of town I leave the lights on too in my bedroom, so I can see the spooks as they come in my room. :-)
But none have made it yet. Must be that killer kitty cat we have. :-)
Be brave, and always keep a "loaded" high heel on hand.
Do what I do Laney (since yes, your fears are relatively irrational.
- I had a cat so I could blame all noises in the night on it. (we're currently without one and I found out a mouse can sound like your ski masked man too)
- Make sure every single centimeter of your windows is covered so you can't get scared of your reflection or normal night shadows.
- Keep your cell on and charged.
- STay up late on the internet because, even though they can't help you, being online with virtual people FEELS safe.
- Find the late night worship/praise music channel on your TV. Play it softly at night. Even if you can't hear it clearly you'll feel better knowing Gods praise is blanketing your house.
- Read and reread and read again Psalms 91, especially the "demons of the night" part.
- Stop watching any and ALL crime scene & supernatural dramas.
- Call me anytime if any of the above fail to comfort you.
Those are my secrets of the trade. ;-)
